Periodontal disease is a bacterial infection that occurs on the roots of the teeth and along the gum line, and it’s often the result of a lack of oral hygiene. In addition to attacking your teeth’s foundation, it’s also been identified as a major risk factor for other serious, full-body conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s. We’re more than able to combat this problem with periodontal therapy in Poway, CA, and treating it early is always best. So, if you or a loved one has red, swollen, or sensitive gums, be sure to come see us before symptoms get worse!
In most cases, periodontal disease is the result of bacteria-filled tartar (hardened plaque) being allowed to build up on the teeth below the gum line. Scaling & root planing is a type of dental cleaning that’s able to physically remove this tartar, plus the roots of the teeth are slightly reshaped and smoothed out to encourage healing. By helping the gums firmly reattach to the roots of the teeth, we can drastically lower a patient’s chances of reinfection.
For more advanced cases of periodontal disease, dentists used to have to treat it by performing a minor surgery, in which the gum tissue was slightly peeled back so that bacteria could be removed from the roots of the teeth. Now, Dr. Sepe is able to use a much less invasive approach with laser gum therapy. A small device about the size of a pen emits a highly-concentrated beam of light, and this instantly vaporizes bacteria deep below the gum line while not affecting healthy gum tissue at all, leading to a fast, effective, and comfortable treatment.
